Looking for a small form factor and stylish flash drive that fits easily in your pocket? then the Kingston DataTraveler Mini 3.0 flash drive might be a perfect choice. The Kingston DataTraveler Mini 3.0 was announced a year back and is one of the slimmest and stylish Kingston’s USB 3.0 flash drive that offers fast transfer speeds and comes in three different storage capacities: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The DataTraveler Mini 3.0 features a compact form factor and can easily fit in a pocket to keep it accessible when required. The DataTraveler Mini 3.0 takes advantage of the performance improvements offered by USB 3.0 technology and is also backwards compatible with existing USB 2.0 ports. According to Kingston, the DataTraveler Mini 3.0 is capable of 70MB/s read and up to 15MB/s write.
Design and Features
The Mini 3.0 earns its name with a USB 3.0 connection and a chassis that is extremely elegant. The tiny drive measures just 0.23 x 1.67 x 0.5 inches (HxWxD). Our review model is a bright Emerald color, but the drive is also available in Ruby Red, Emerald Green, Turquoise Blue, or Graphite Gray.
The compact, capless design wraps the drive and USB connector in a thin sheet of metal, with a plastic end providing just enough shape for traction when you grab it to pull it out of a plug. That metal housing provides a more traditional USB plug end. It also has a built-in key loop, so you can put it on a key ring or lanyard without much difficulty. You will want to connect it to something, be it keys or a lanyard or anything else, because the small drive is definitely small enough to lose easily.
Pricing and Performance
Our review unit has 128GB capacity, which is quite large, but with a list price of approx INR 3,099. The DataTraveler Mini 3.0 is the affordable product in the market. It’s also available in these capacities (32GB, 64GB, and 16GB). Kingston covers the drive with a 5-year warranty and free technical support.
Plug the drive into a USB 3.0 port, and Kingston DataTraveler Mini 3.0 (16GB) performance is pretty good — Kingston claims 70MBps read speed and 10MBps write speed. In our own testing, which consists of multiple timed data transfers averaged together, we saw read speeds of 75MBps and write speeds of 12MBps, right in line with Kingston’s performance claims. Connect to a USB 2.0 port and the drive won’t be as fast, due to the slower transfer speeds the 2.0 connection can handle. That said, performance was still quite good, with 31MBps (read) and 7MBps (write) speeds.
In general, the Kingston DataTraveler Mini 3.0 USB drive is an excellent device with solid performance, an affordable price, and a stylish, compact design. All of which are of the result of high-quality engineering standards and is definitely Top Value in our books!
